Computer Help
- My computer seems to be "stuck" or not completing a request such as opening or closing a file or application. Something is slowing your processor down. First try closing out of any other application that you may have open. Next use CTRL + ALT and Delete all at the same time to shut down your computer. You can also go to your start menu and select restart or shut down. When you reboot your system it usually resolves whatever was causing your processor to "hang".
- My username or password is not working. Ususally password protection is case sensitive. Check to see if your caps lock is on. If not, place cursor in the textbox and use your backspace key to delete any blank spaces that may be there. Blank spaces are recognized by most password and username protection programs. When in doubt, close the browser window and reopen and try again.
- How can I protect my computer against virus attacks? It is imperative to have the most up to date virus protection software protecting your computer. If you have a high speed connection, you should also have a firewall protecting your computer. Sometimes these applications are made available from your ISP and in some cases included in your access charges. Keep your browser version up to date as well. Newer releases usually have fixed any "holes" in their previous versions because of malicious activity and they have made refinements to your ability to "browse" the internet.
- You are not sure what the problem is. Use your Help menu option on which ever application you are currently experiencing problems. You can also use your Help from your operating system and your ISP. When experiencing difficulty with the AEA website, try to get as much information about your problem. This means doing a screen print of your error message and your screen or copying the error message to word or notepad and emailing it to webmasteraea@electrology.com. Keep in mind that some problems are specific to your computer and may not be able to be duplicated on another computer. That is why you need to at the very least to compile the error message received and do a screen print and forward to the AEA webmaster for further assistance.
- I received a strange email with an attachment. Never open emails from someone that you do not know especially if they have an atttachment of any kind. Delete it immediately. Make sure that you are scanning any attachments for viruses prior downloading to your computer. Never forward a strange email to anyone and ask for help, you may unknowingly spread a virus.
- Why should I have the most up to date browser application? To protect your computer, to make sure that your are able to view websites as they have been designed and developed to meet standard compliant browser applications and to increase the ease with which you can "surf the web". You may not realize that a website will look different in different browsers. Most web sites are coded in such a way to render according to standards set by a Wrold Wide Web Consortium also know as W3C.
The computer tips listed have been compiled from past requests for help. If you have a tip you would like to add or a questions email the AEA webmaster
